The State Hermitage, St. Petersburg
The State Hermitage occupies six grand buildings located along the Neva embankment in the very center of St. Petersburg. The leading place in this wonderful architectural ensemble, which appeared in the 18 – 19 centuries, is occupied by the Winter Palace, the residence of the Russian tsars built in 1754-1762 under the project of Rastrelli. The museum complex also includes the Eastern wing of the General staff, Menshikov Palace and the fund archives built lately.
During two and a half centuries the hermitage collected three million of masterpieces and monuments of the world culture from the Stone Age up to our century.
