Artistic parquet represents ornamental compositions of various degree of complexity created from hard and exotic kinds of trees. It is also called mosaic parquet/mosaic patterns.
In Russia of XVII – XIX centuries, artistic parquet was processed only manually. The mass production of parquet boards at the factories has begun only since the 70-ies of the XIX century. So factory parquet was widely spread only by the beginning of the 80-ies of the last century. However, the development of mechanized parquet did not mean improvement of its quality. By the beginning of the XX century, almost all factories switched to mass production of simple parquet blocks from various kinds of wood. Parquet floors of simple flooring are widely used for the construction of apartments and communal buildings. Artistic parquet becomes very rare.
Artistic parquet revival began with restoration works. Now, right at the beginning of the XXI century, despite of the science and technical development, one can doubt whether all technological secrets of old masters, cabinetmakers and parquet floor layers were able to be restored. It is possible to say that thanks literally to a few restoration Masters, artistic parquet technology in Russia survived up to the present days. However, the technology is changed over the years, the ornament and figure details are not cut out manually any more, but by means of milling machine tools and programmed numerical control. Some companies cut out the details with laser. Many machines were invented to facilitate the work, but … the present day technology of artistic floors’ creation is great art, too, being the laborious and exquisite workmanship of the true Masters.
